Welcome to the Basic Users Lightroom forum!

I (and perhaps Rick, too) will be using e-mail for any important announcements about our group's activities, but this forum will be a good medium for chatting about our progress in learning LR, sharing ideas (or struggles!) with others in or outside the group, reporting on your progress, or anything else that may suit you. So, have at it!

Scott Kelby has started a 10-part series of postings for new Lightroom users: "10 Things I would Tell New Lightroom Users." The site also has a lots of other good stuff on Lightroom.

Is everyone in the Basics group up to speed now on importing images and managing them within Lightroom? If not, please let me know so we can do something about that!

We will eventually be joining the Intermediate group in launching into the Develop module, but a date for that has not yet been set. I would guess that it will be sometime in June before that happens. In the meantime, there are lots of excellent tutorial videos available online that will tell you almost everything you need to know.

How do I access the Nik collection in LR?

And also, I can't seem to restore a previous backup in LR. Is there a trick to it?

Thanks to whomever answers this.

New to LR and have a basic question: if I'm in the Develop mode and want to save a photo in more than one way, how do I do that. In other words - I wanted the edited larger image AND I want a second image of just one part of the larger image.

In LR you can right-click an image and choose 'Create Virtual Copy'. You can then process the Virtual Copy any way you like without affecting the original. You can also have more than 1 Virtual Copy. The Virtual Copy will have text added that say Copy 1 or Copy 2 etc.

Help!! I've only been using LR for several months. I thought I was getting it, but now I'm lost again. I have imported my images to mirror my external drive folders. However, after I imported some images today, my various catalog folders disappeared and I can't figure out how to get them back. I just see all photos lumped together. I'm sure this is a simple fix, but I'm spending way too much time trying to figure it out. Thanks! (I attached a screenshot)

Hi Dana, I not sure that I fully understand what you are asking so you may need to straighten me out. From the screenshot you attached, I see that "All Photographs" is selected, left column almost to the top. With this selected all your photo will be displayed without any folder context. To display photos in your catalog by folders you need to go to the "Folder" selection on the left. In this selection you should see your disk drive(s) shown. You can expand here. Even so you may not see the folders exactly the same way you see them on your computer's file manager. If you don't see them in a directory hierarchy and want to then Right Click on a folder and select "Show Parent". You may need to do this a couple of time depending on your file structure. If I am on the right track and want more info let me know and I will email you with more details.
