A couple of questions about Lightroom file management:
1. Does exporting a file remove the file from Lightroom? For some reason I am frequently finding that photos that show up in Lightroom "are not available" and I need to re-import them.
2. I have lightroom on two different computers, and although I have all my work and personal files synced through OneDrive/Sharepoint, and easily accessed through either computer, I haven't yet figured out where/how the LRC files can or should be stored so that what is done on one computer is also available on the other computer. I.e., where/ how can LRC photos be saved in one of my synced folders so that they can be found and accessed by either computer?
3. As a result, my process is to edit the photo, and then export it to my OneDrive/Sharepoint photography folder where I have things organized in ways that have worked for me for years, and where I can easily find it to then upload it for CCC review. This seems super onerous. Is this the same process others use, or is there a way to find the edited photo in LRC and upload it directly from LRC to the CCC for review?
Until I can get these things figured out, I'm not sure I'm ready to figure out the whole "catalog" feature in LRC.
Thanks for any guidance!
The quick answer to your first question is that LRC exports only a copy of your photo, in whatever format or size you designate.
For the other questions, you should email either me or Gene directly to get best answers. Based on what you are asking here, your first priority should be to learn the basics of LRC catalog system (it's quite easy!) and import all of your photos direclty from wherever they are now into a catalog. Whatever organization scheme you use now will remain exactly as it is.
First we need to ask WHY you have 2 copies of LRC running and I'm assuming 2 LRC catalogs. Or do you have a single catalog shared between 2 instances of LRC?
Either way that's going to be quite a juggling act. LRC is much more than just an application to edit. LRC's catalog is a SQL (SQL Lite) database. It's keeping track of the photo files and all the changes that are made to the files. If you have 2 LRC instances it will be very tricky to keep things straight.
I have 2 instances but one is on a laptop that does not have access to my main library. I use it to track photos when traveling then export the photos as LRC Catalog that I can later import into my main LRC Catalog.
LrC can run one only one computer. You can run LrC on multiple computers and see and have access to the same images but the LrC catalog on each computer will be different!!!! The Lightroom eco system allow you to see, edit, and share your images from any device anywhere. LrC itself cannot. If you have a fast internet connection the Light Room eco system works great and is most beneficial especially to those that travel a lot. It's way too much to try to explain in an email; I will be glad to work with you over a zoom call. Gene
Agree with Bill. And I'll add this: If you use two different computers regularly, all of your photos in a LRC catalog should be stored on a portable hard drive that can be attached to whichever computer you are using at the time. Alternatively, they can be stored in the same place in the cloud--One Drive, Dropbox, or whatever. Then any imports of new photos or edits to exisiting ones will be added to that drive or cloud address and will be available to LRC on either computer.
Thank you all. I have LRC on two computers so that I can work on them while travelling (if there's time) - a work computer that I travel with, when travelling for work, and a personal computer that I travel with when doing personal travel. I'm able to access files through either computer via OneDrive/Sharepoint. I'm suddenly realizing that I was confusing LRC, which is downloaded, with the online Lightroom - which is where I started before shifting on your recommendation to LRC. So, of course, argh, I can't believe I was still thinking of it as working in the cloud. Not.
Ideally, I get I should have LRC on only one computer, but if I want to be able to work on photos when I'm travelling for work, too, then I have to learn how to do what Bill does - export what I've worked on and then import into my main catalog on my personal computer.
The other issue is perplexing: I don't understand what I'm doing to cause photos to disappear from LRC, i.e. no longer available, and requiring a 2nd import.
Gene, thank you for your offer. I'll reach out to you to set up a time to learn the LRC ecosystem and catalog system.
Thanks again!
Can you have LrC's library on an external drive?? At one time the answer was a NO.
Tanya, I will be glad to show you how to sync images in LrC to the rest of Lr eco system which allow you to access your images anywhere on any device. Also after you do a one-time setup all images imported to Lr on any device will automatically be imported into LrC.
What Bill described was about the only cumbersome way until the Lr eco system gained maturity. It is easy to use once you understand all the pieces. Let me know when I can help.

Awesome, Gene, I'll send you an email!
