June 2017 Meeting

Thursday, June 8, 2017 - 6:00pm
Judge:
Steven Johnson
Theme:
Flowers

Flowers in the wild, flowers in shops, flowers in your garden. The possibilities for photographing flowers are endless, and not as easy as you might think.Try to come up with something different . . . a field of flowers, one or three flowers, old flowers, buds, macro flowers Since flowers are a favorite subject and therefore commonplace, high-scoring images will require something exceptionally well crafted and creative to the judge. There are lots of online resources available. Here’s one: http://improvephotography.com/30196/21-tips- creative-flower-photography/

The judge for our meeting this month will be Steven Johnson. Steve teaches photography at Eastern Mennonite University and is chairman of the visual and communication arts department. He specializes in applying nature photography to conservation. For a selection of his images click on www.stevendavidjohnson.com.
Steve will present a program titled "Just Below the Surface -- Photographing Life in Rivers, Creeks and Vernal Pools," which he describes as follows. Most underwater photography workshops focus on oceans and reefs, but remarkable biodiversity can also be found in creeks, rivers and seasonal ponds. We’ll look at equipment, techniques and aesthetics related to documenting the seasonal lifecycles of freshwater denizens such as salamanders, frogs, fish and even mammals. Topics will include: learning to find freshwater life, freshwater conservation issues, choosing the right underwater camera for the occasion, underwater lighting, and wide angle and macro equipment.
